The Debate

The topic of cannabis legalisation has long been contested. Currently, governments generally opt to ban its usage given potential adverse effects and adopting a hardline policy against substance use. However, some governments are choosing to legalise it to minimise harm associated with its usage and medicinal benefits.

Here I present the argument cannabis should be legalised, for two main reasons. Firstly, the principle of bodily autonomy should prevail and people should be allowed to do what they want with their body. The government should not be stepping in to dictate what people are doing, including using cannabis. Secondly, a large stakeholder of this debate are people with medical conditions (e.g. chronic pain, cancer) who would benefit greatly from fully legalised cannabis.

Assuming that this debate is about recreationla marijuana, decriminalisation produces better legal outcomes than legalisation, particularly looking at the incarceration rates of the poor.

Influence the outcome of this debate by casting your votes

You can cast your vote for speakers that best align with your views on this debate. The more votes a speaker gets the higher up the list they appear. The speaker with the most votes will be highlighted as the Leading Speaker.

Everybody gets two votes. One vote "FOR" and one vote "AGAINST" which means you can only vote once per column. You can change your vote at any time - just click the checkmark () where you previously voted to remove your vote and you can cast it again.

If you use both your votes, they will effectively cancel each other out in terms of the overall debate results. However, your votes will influence each speaker individually and count towards the determination of the Leading Speaker.
