The Debate

Climate change is one of the greatest crises facing the planet; with rising, acidifying oceans, mass deforestation and environmental damage bound to cause mass migration, famine, drought and many more problems that will continue far into the future. It is one of a number of crises that will define my generation, and must be addressed.

Is Climate Change the greatest threat to humanity?

60%, 60% of all animals have been wiped out since 1970, and that’s the conservative estimate from the World Wildlife fund. Others have placed that number up to 83%. How many canaries do we need to send down the coal mine before we realise, we need to stop?

The issues drawn from climate change are extensive: fires, droughts, famines, natural disasters, the oceanic problems such as, ice at the poles melting, and as a result the oceanic belt at risk, This is what stops Europe crashing into a permanent ice age and all the fish in the sea dying and its already slowed by 30%. Or the millions of people whose homes will be flooded in Tuvalu, Bangladesh, China, and any low-lying coastal region, around the world. And the water is getting more acidic, which because it is a buffer solution that controls the acidity, basically that holds steady until it breaks suddenly, and the ocean has gotten 30% more acidic in the last century.

That final effect is according to my year 11 chemistry textbook. It doesn’t take a genius to connect the dots, it doesn’t even take a WACE certificate. Climate change and environmental degradation will devastate us.

Do we really expect that society will be able to deal with such a disintegration of resources? Do we honestly expect that war won’t break out? You can be damn sure biological and nuclear weapons will rear their ugly heads when nations are starving.

The real reason Climate change is the biggest threat. That is because it is systematically intertwined with our society. We are so reliant on coal and oil that we have already gone to war over it, and we, as a global community, are willing to put up with the Saudi’s murdering journalists just so we can get that sweet, sweet black gold. No other threat is so ingrained, so certain, and all other threats are enabled because of it, and our most senior politician is holding a lump of coal and shouting are you scared.

      Yes, I am scared.

We only have one planet, and if we want to save ourselves, we have to deal with climate change, the greatest threat to humanity.
